There Will Be Blood

Finally, I’ve got something on the revolution currently underway in Libya.

This cartoon is mostly a response to people lamenting the recent increases in gas prices ostensibly caused by democratic protests against various Middle Eastern dictators, like Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi. It irked me that many Americans, including a lot of other cartoonists, seemed to be more concerned about how much it costs to fill up their cars than the freedom and lives of foreigners, so I wanted to do something pointing out how our own spending habits support these brutal regimes.

Do you really need to use morbid obesity to represent greed, self-interest or corruption? I’m fat, and I’ve been following these uprisings and revolutions since Tunisia, cheering them on, sharing their adulation and their woe, and not only do I not complain about the rising gas prices, I’m disgusted when people complain about it for the exact same reasons you are.

Don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not demanding that you go and change it right now or anything like that. I’m just suggesting that, you know, some greedy, corrupt and obscenely wealthy people are thin or average-sized too. Just ask Scott Walker.

I just thought I’d mention it.

I wouldn’t care so much about the increased gas prices if I knew that the extra cost was going to fund the the Libyan resistance in their fight instead of just lining the oil industries pockets. Or if I at least had some assurance that the leader who takes over Libya will be better for the Libyan people than Gaddafi is. But because these situations both aren’t the case, I shall continue to gripe about the gas prices.

M. Seegz, maybe he’s using obesity to represent Americans more than just greed. Feel free to step up to the plate and help us combat this nasty reputation we’ve earned around the world 🙂
