The Lesser of Two Evils

The Lesser of Two Evils

In a new book, Pope Benedict XVI recently ok’d the use of condoms, calling them the “lesser of two evils” when the alternative is the continued spread of AIDS.

While this may be a step in the right direction for the Catholic Church, there’s still a long, long way to go, as the Pope continued to forbid condoms for the purpose of preventing unwanted pregnancies, referring to their use in such cases as “immoral.”

Oh, he didn’t say anything nearly that generous. This was the relevant passage from his book:

“There may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one cannot do whatever one wants. But it is not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection. That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality. ”

Nope, he’s still saying no condoms for HIV, only because for male (and female, he later clarified!) prostitutes, it’s the first sign that they might be moving away from their horrid life of sin and towards true morality.

It’s still just as awful as you’d expect for the Catholic Church.
